Junior Division

Updated for 2019

Rules for all Junior Division Classes

  1. No more than one entry by an exhibitor in each section.
  2. Exhibits must be new work of the exhibitor.
  3. Articles should be entered according to the grade the student was in as of June 15.
  4. Exhibitor may show in a higher grade level, but not lower.
  5. If more than 6 entries in any one section, a 4th prize will be awarded, the same as a 3rd.
  6. Read carefully what is required. Not following instructions may result in disqualification or a lower placement. Size restrictions will be strictly adhered to.
  7. Articles will be judged as the product of youth…not as perfect works of art.
  8. Originality and effort are as important as workmanship.
  9. Parental supervision is encouraged, but all work must be done by the child.

Important note for Junior Exhibitors: You can pick up your prize winnings starting on Friday of the Fair, at the Secretary’s Office. Prizes in all Junior Division Classes will be available until Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Secretary’s Office.

Junior Poster, Essay and Colouring

Prizes: 1st – $5.00, 2nd – $4.00, 3rd – $3.00

JS1A-C: Youth Poster Competition

JS1A: Junior – up to and including Grade 4
JS1B: Intermediate – Grade 5 to Grade 8 inclusive
JS1C: Senior – Grade 9 to Grade 12 inclusive

  • Original hand-made design to promote the Kinmount Fair
  • Fair Dates: August 30, 31 and September 1, 2019
  • Theme: “The Fair with the Forward Look”
  • Poster to be hand-drawn
  • Size: Minimum 8.5 x 11 (23 cm by 28 cm) Maximum: 12” x 18” (30.5 cm by 46 cm) Entry to be mounted on Black Art Card to give a 2” border.
  • Name of Fair, District #, Contact Person (Sue Pearson), Owner and complete mailing address to be clearly labelled on back of each entry. Judging to be based on overall appearance, ability to attract and hold attention, clarity of competition theme, and quality of materials/end product. The winning entry to go to the District 4 Competition.

JS2 – Essay Contest

  • Topic: “Why the Kinmount Fair is Important to Me”
  • Length: 250 words maximum

JS3 – Kinmount Fair Colouring Book Page

Create a colouring book page using Kinmount Fair as the theme. Picture should be drawn/outlined in black marker.

Junior Baking and Food

Prizes: 1st – $5.00, 2nd – $4.00, 3rd – $3.00

Sections JB1-3: up to and including Grade 4

JB1 – One Cupcake, decorated, any theme

To be displayed on a 6 “ (17cm) paper plate. Decorations must be edible. Item judged on decoration only.

JB2 – Rice Krispies Jack-O-Lantern

Judged on appearance, taste, texture and creativity of recipe and presentation.

JB3 – Christmas Tree

Made using an ice cream cone as a base decorated with icing and candies.

Sections JB4-7: Grade 5 to Grade 8, inclusive

JB4 – Baking Item made with maple syrup, 2 on a plate

JB5 – A small square cake (8” or 9”) decorated to look like a quilt block

JB6 – Decorative, edible sheep made from marshmallows, etc.

To be displayed on a 6″ paper plate

JB7 – OAAS “Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest”

Open to all youths ages 10-15 years (as of December 31, 2020). The entry is to consist of 8 homemade cookies (max size 3”) to be displayed in a sturdy box with an easy to remove lid. Box may be decorated. Judging to be based on presentation, general appearance, internal appearance and flavour. The winning entry goes to the District 4 competition in October/November.

Picture with theme “Safety Around the School Bus.” Use any medium. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8” x 11”)

GS2 – Grade 4 and lower

Picture with theme “Safety at Halloween.” Use any medium. Maximum size 30 cm x 45 cm (12” x 18”)

Class 45 – Preschool and Kindergarten

Prizes: 1st – $2.00, 2nd – $1.75, 3rd – $1.50

Preschool

  1. Sheep made from cotton balls. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ ” x 11”)
  2. 3 of the smallest leaves you can find, mounted on a 6” paper plate
  3. Finger Painting. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)

Junior Kindergarten

  1. 6 pretty natural stones displayed in ½ egg carton
  2. Caterpillar made from an egg carton, features can be added using any media
  3. Sponge Painting. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)

Senior Kindergarten

  1. Spider Creature made from pipe cleaners
  2. 6 items found on a nature walk, displayed on a 6” paper plate
  3. Drawing of a Community Helper. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½” x 11”)

Class 46 – Elementary School

Prizes: 1st – $2.00, 2nd – $1.75, 3rd – $1.50

Grade 1

  1. Largest maple leaf, pressed or waxed, mounted on paper.
  2. Painting using warm and cool colours. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  3. Decorate a tracing of your hand or foot.

Grade 2

  1. Painting, any subject, using a minimum of 3 colours. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  2. Print the names of 6 vegetables that can be displayed at the Kinmount Fair.
  3. Homemade Mask – Superhero Themed.

Grade 3

  1. Sponge painting of a fall scene. Maximum size 30cm x 45cm ( 12” x 18”)
  2. Homemade Mask – Superhero Theme
  3. Create a butterfly using coffee filters
  4. Rocket made from paper towel tube

Grade 4

  1. A collection of wild flowers in a small rubber boot.
  2. What’s at the end of the rainbow? Paint a picture. Maximum size 22cm x 28 cm (8 ½ x 11”).
  3. Decorated Sneaker, any media, 2 D or 3D.
  4. Any creation using a Pringles Can.
  5. Paper airplane made from folding a newspaper, do not decorate.

Grade 5

  1. Any item made from wood, including carving, burning. Maximum size 30cm (12”) in any direction
  2. Create a ‘Superhero” Comic Strip with captioning.
  3. Make a ‘canimal’. Turn ONE can into an animal or bird by adding features.
  4. Animal collage using animals native to Canada. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  5. Celebrate July 1 with a picture of fireworks. Create a picture of fireworks, any media, 2D or 3D. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”).
  6. Decorated clay pot. Maximum size 4”

Grade 6

  1. Any article of stitchery – sewing, knitting, crochet, etc.
  2. Pencil or ink sketch – Superhero Theme. Maximum size 30cm x 45cm (12 x 18”)
  3. Drawing or painting of an animal in its habitat. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  4. Inukshuk, mounted on a sturdy base, must be securely constructed, not more than 8” (20 cm) tall
  5. Monster from crushed tinfoil.
  6. A sign or decoration on a stake to put in your flower garden, no taller than 50 cm.

Grades 7 & 8

  1. Collage of Superheroes. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  2. Canadian landscape painting in water colour or tempra. Maximum size 22cm x 28cm (8 ½ x 11”)
  3. Fill a mason jar decoratively for a table centrepiece.
  4. A decorated container with 5 non-perishable food items, making one meal to be donated to the Food Bank after the fair
  5. Family tree. Minimum of 4 generations creatively displayed.
  6. Create a replica of a plow, using household materials, 2 D or 3D. No more than 20 cm (8”)

Class 47 – Secondary School

Prizes: 1st – $5.00, 2nd – $4.00, 3rd – $3.00

  1. Poster depicting a Canadian historical event, named, any media. Maximum size 30cm x 45cm (12″ x 18”)
  2. Make something useful from something used.
  3. Free standing scarecrow. No more than 3’ tall.

Class 45, 46, and 47 Special – $15.00
